Friday, September 15, 2006
Over 70 racers competed in drag racing action Friday night at Maui Raceway Park. The Summit Pro final featured Jay Nakamura and Ed Suzuki, both of Pukalani in a rematch of last month’s trophy run. Suzuki left the starting line a little too quickly, handing the win to Nakamura who nailed the tree and his dial-in. In the Summit Sportsman class, John Eliasen of Lahaina defeated Geoff Wachter of Makawao at the starting line in a close contest. The Summit Street final contest was also a battle won at the starting line. Clyde Miyoshi of Wailuku put Wayne Asada on the trailer with a .538 reaction time. Rory Goss of Kihei edged Bobby Ito of Kula in the Pro Bikes final. Goss had a slightly better reaction time and ran closer to his dial-in with a 128.58 mph winning pass. The Sport Compact final was also determined at the starting line. Michael Pakele of Kula left the starting line just .012 seconds too quickly, handing the win to Ben Damasco of Kahului. Nearly 90 racers went head to head in drag racing action Saturday night at Maui Raceway Park. The Fast Gas final featured a dragster and a door slammer with Jon Shirota of Wailuku taking the win over Scott Hirata of Pukalani. Shirota’s dragster edged Hirata’s ’73 Vega at the starting line. It was a battle of Ford versus Chevy in the Super Street 10.90 final run. Joey Amoral of Makawao took the win in his Camaro when Lahaina’s John Eliasen “broke out”, running just three thousandths of a second quicker than his dial-in in his ’66 Mustang. In the 11.90 Jr. Pro Gas final, Kurt Buland of Kihei notched his third consecutive win over Robert Miskae also of Kihei. In a close final contest in the 12.90 Pro Street bracket, Petro Palad of Wailuku took the win over Thomas Hussey of Pukalani. Aris Antoni of Kahului took home the winner trophy in the 1320 Performance Pro Sport Compact contest with a 13 second run against Michael Pakele of Kula. Wayne Asada of Makawao put Buck Buehlman of Kihei on the trailer in the Street final. Asada scored his first victory of the season in his Chevy S-10 pick up. A red light determined the outcome of the Pro Bike final with Martin Hultquist of Kahului taking the win over Dave Oka of Kula. Three Maui County Mayoral candidates met with Valley Isle Timing Association members at the race track over the weekend. Mayor Alan Arakawa and Council Member Charmaine Tavares both took fast passes down the track to cap off the evening. On Friday, former Mayor James “Kimo” Apana also spoke to VITA members.
