Thirty of Maui’s fastest door slammers competed in the first annual Maui’s Fastest Street Car Shootout this weekend at Maui Raceway Park. The final battle featured two Camaros of comparable power with a dial-in variance of only five-hundreths of a second. Mark Collo of Kahului took the win over Tony Astronomo of Kihei. Astronomo broke out by running two-hundreths of a second faster than his dial-in, thereby forfeiting the run and handing the win to Collo. Collo earned one-thousand dollars for his victory as well as a four-foot gold trophy. Astronomo took home five-hundred dollars and a three-foot silver prize. The special competition sponsored by Vic’s Towing and Lowboy Service/Campos Auto Body also awarded the Fastest Domestic trophy to Martin Hultquist of Kahului for a ten second pass in his 1970 Dodge Dart. Whitey Wojcieski of Makawao won the Fastest Import award in his 1957 VW Bug. Both racers received five-hundred dollars for their efforts. Over one thousand race fans watched nearly 200 racers compete on the Valley Isle’s ¼ mile drag strip this weekend. The Valley Isle Timing Association’s next event is September 15 and 16.
