Over 160 race entries competed in drag racing action Saturday at Maui Raceway Park at the 10th Annual George “Flintstone” Andrade Memorial. Maui racers won the majority of the contests but an O’ahu Jr. Dragster took home the top prize in the Quick 16 Jr. Dragster Shootout and a Kauai racer was runner up in the Top Dragster category. Due to the larger than normal field of racers, the last contest was decided early Sunday morning providing spectators with over 10 hours of drag racing action. Puunene’s Gill Cuadro kept the big money here on the Valley Isle this year by defeating Kapaa’s Kevin Rapozo in the Top Dragster competition. Gill’s winning pass was clocked at 8.114 seconds/145.12 mph. Maui’s fastest door slammers competed in the Top Sportsman category. Makawao’s Kevin Yoshida broke out and handed the win to Pukalani’s Scott Hirata. Scott had a .538 reaction time and posted a winning 9.906 run at 118.13 mph. Makawao’s Mark Caires won the 1320 Performance Pro Sport Compact contest at the line with a .526 reaction time. Pukalani’s Nelson DeRego fell short with a .609 light. Maui’s fastest street machines competed in the Paradise Auto Parts Super 32 Street Shoot Out. The final round was a battle of two Camaros. Makawao’s Charles Oliveira took the win against Kihei’s Jason Bargabos with a .568 reaction time. Kahului’s Martin Hultquist picked up his second trophy of the weekend in the Quick 16 Bike Shoot Out over Wailuku’s Darol Britton. In a close contest, Darol beat Martin at the line but Martin ran closer to his dial-in. Reaction time decided the Pro ET category. Kihei’s John Hultquist took the win over Makawao’s Geoff Wachter with a .519 tree. Both racers were less than .05 off their dial-ins. In the Jr. Dragster competition, Honolulu’s Holly Nitta took home the top prize against Maui’s own Marcus Villaverde. Marcus ran closer to his dial-in but Holly nailed the tree with a .583 reaction time. Holly also took home trophies for Best Reaction Time and Closest to Dial-In.
